We examine whether following social media betting tipsters is likely to be profitable in Nigeria, how to identify a ‘good influencer’ and the red flags to steer well clear of to ensure profitability.
Sports betting has skyrocketed in Nigeria in recent years. The rise of betting influencers, such as famous sports stars and celebrities with substantial social media followings, has greatly aided in the market's expansion.
According to a recent NAN (News Agency of Nigeria) statistic, there are over 70 million active bettors in Nigeria between the ages of 18 and 40. These trends have made sports betting more accessible and popular than ever before.
This begs the question of whether influencers in betting are beneficial or detrimental.
A study was recently conducted to find out whether following popular Nigerian sports betting influencers and ambassadors made sound financial sense. This was done by tracking 5,467 pre-match betting slips from well-known tipsters on X and Telegram to prevent the skewed results when influencers only show their winnings.
The outcomes were verified and covered approximately $4.8 million in tracked bets. The study analysed performance, measured risk across different odds ranges and applied the most common staking strategies to simulate the most realistic results followers would likely see.
Interestingly, the results showed that there was a big difference between the wealth that influencers flaunt online and the actual results. The tipsters collectively lost 25.40% on their promoted bets, while followers staking the same amount on every bet lost 38.27% on their investment.
In every strategy tested in the study, following these influencers led to significant financial losses and raised serious consumer protection concerns.
As with anything in life, there are good and bad influencers. Unfortunately, it’s true that there are many accounts only set up to drive traffic and advertising revenue rather than to give the best advice to followers.
Here are a few tips and red flags to keep in mind:
When analysing which influencer is the most credible, avoid accounts that appear to have been taken over by AI or excessive advertising. These accounts are usually merely redirecting you to their advertising partners or increasing their hits, and may lead directly to scams or bad bets.
When evaluating your options regarding which betting influencer to follow, look to verify as much as possible.
Tipsters who have verifiably positive feedback from their followers are most likely to continue that trend. Also, make sure their following consists of ‘real’ people posting honest reviews, not bots or paid participants.
