A crypto gambling platform has secured a sponsorship deal with Nigerian Premier League side Kwara United. We delve into the important role that gambling company sponsorships play in the success of sports.
As is the case in more developed regions of the world, betting brands are emerging across Africa as the major financial backbone of leagues, teams and related sporting events.
This recent spike in betting-affiliated sponsorships has helped reduce the struggles of sporting bodies, keeping much of the wider industry afloat. Nigeria is a case in point, with the recent announcement of several high-profile sponsorship deals.
In August, a crypto-based online gambling platform offering a wide array of slot games, bonuses, promotions, as well as a sportsbook utilising blockchain technology, obtained dual licenses to offer its online casino and sports betting services in Kenya, thereby expanding its African footprint.
The crypto casino has now secured a sponsorship deal with Nigeria’s Kwara United FC to be their 2025/26 home and away front-of-shirt sponsor. The team competes in the top tier of Nigerian professional football. The deal is set to run for one Nigerian Premier Football League (NPFL) season, but could well be extended.
The club plays in an 18,000-capacity stadium in Ilorin, the capital of Kwara State, and the betting operators' branding will appear across the arena as well as on the team's digital media platforms. The deal is reportedly worth $35,000 (approximately ₦53.6 million).
Other sponsorship news in Nigeria includes Bet9ja, Nigeria’s premier sportsbook and gaming platform, which announced in August that it had struck a major multi-year, multi-fight sponsorship deal with Balmoral Group Promotions. This was aimed at boosting Nigerian boxing’s domestic and international profile.
The online gambling platform has expanded to become one of the most recognised sports betting brands on the continent. It serves millions of avid punters across Nigeria, generating an exceptional turnover exceeding $600 million annually.
No longer content to merely sit back and rake in the profits, indigenous and offshore betting companies provide a valuable source of funding through sponsorships for sports organisations in Nigeria and across Africa.
The influx of this sponsorship money improves the infrastructure for sports, such as upgraded playing fields and facilities, which in some cases could even include the building of, or upgrading stadiums. Socially, these initiatives create a sense of community pride, especially in impoverished areas.
In Nigeria and in other African countries, sport offers an escape from poverty. By stepping forward, sportsbetting sites are providing the crucial financial support to fund tournaments and ensure the sustainability of sporting teams, which play an important role in nurturing talent.
Gambling companies bring far more than cash injections for sporting bodies in Nigeria. They often lead to promising young athletes getting the necessary break that leads them to a great career as a sports professional.
For many youngsters, these sponsorships may be the first step to a prosperous future that might not otherwise have been possible.
